The Story
Learn Kannada SmartApp began with a simple yet powerful mission: to make learning Kannada accessible, engaging, and meaningful for everyone, from absolute beginners to language enthusiasts. Created by Varun Anantha, a passionate Android developer from Holalkere, Karnataka, the app was born out of a need he saw firsthand. While volunteering to teach Kannada at his first company, Varun noticed that a 10-day program wasn’t enough to give non-Kannadigas the conversational skills they needed. He realized there were few quality resources to support practical Kannada learning. That’s when he, along with his friend Rohith Aggithaya and Pooja H N, who lent her voice to the app, took it upon themselves to build an app that could serve as a comprehensive and friendly guide for Kannada learners worldwide.
Varun’s journey to develop this app wasn’t easy; starting as a functional tester with minimal coding experience, he taught himself Android app development entirely on his own. What began as a passion project after work hours grew into a fully-fledged learning platform. The first version of Learn Kannada SmartApp was launched in 2018 during Kannada Rajyotsava, and it quickly gained traction with users across India and beyond. Now with over 5,00,000 organic downloads and a 4.6+ rating, the app has established itself as the world’s leading Kannada learning app, trusted by learners in more than 100 countries.
